My Neighborhood idea

In recent years, resident well-being has been pulled down during the Corona pandemic.

Citizens have reinvented public venues to overcome this pandemic and have also taken on new roles to think about how to set up this.

This resulted in the Wellbeing in the interim project.

It is a vision of the Municipality of Amsterdam to promote the well-being of its residents by improving the environment where the resident lives optimizing, and only achieve this by letting the local resident think along about the design of the public space and to draw up a positive feedback link for this.

The problem

The Municipality of Amsterdam has a problem with communication with the residents. Currently, the Church acts on its own when they want certain problems without consulting the resident. When the Municipality does ask for feedback from the residents, this is often one-sided communication in which the resident does not receive feedback on what has happened to their ideas or what is being done with them. When the resident no longer receives feedback from the Municipality of Amsterdam, it seems as if nothing happened with this. This ensures that local residents become demotivated because it paints the picture that they are not heard by the municipality. In addition, this apparently perceived disinterest by residents leads to lower participation in future questions from the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The concept

Our proposal for this problem is a concept called “My Neighborhood Idea”. It is a concept that should greatly improve communication between Municipality and resident with both increased participation and feedback. It will solve the problems of the municipality that has it with involvement and a lack of a positive solve feedback loop. We will achieve this through the concept “My neighborhood idea”. This concept consists of 2 components. The 1st component is a conversation starter by means of an interactive and the 2nd component.

The interactive board

The concept starts with a conversation starter in the form of the interactive board, these interactive boards can be found in places where people come and for a while “standing still”, such as at bus/metro stations, shopping centers and community centers. The local resident’s attention is attracted by a confrontational/intriguing question, the conversation starter, this question is personalized by neighborhood. The local resident can then share his opinion on the
interactive board. About 6 questions are asked about the neighbourhood. The data will be sent immediately to the municipality, to be returned to a municipal employee can be found on the dashboard. After answering these questions, the local resident is led to the download page of the app that can be seen on the board via a QR code.

The app

The “My Neighborhood Idea” app can be downloaded from the App or Play Store
local residents can share their ideas about designing public space with the local residents.

This works as follows, the users register an account after which they can upload an idea with the necessary information and reinforce by photos and/or sketches in order to get a picture of the idea.

The homepage of the app works like a feed, at the top of the page you have a overview of the plans that are now underway throughout Amsterdam, this is shown as a kind of highlight reel, with a link added for more information. Below that you have a feed with all the ideas of the local residents that have been uploaded. You can view, like, dislike and comment on these ideas in detail. The municipality also has a view on this and can also like, dislike and respond to the ideas.

You can also view the progress of plans in your area in detail. And of course a page with your profile, where you have an overview of your ideas
with the comments and likes and dislikes.

The app gives residents a positive feedback loop in which they can actively see where the plans are being realized. This ensures that the participating resident gets the feeling that his/her voice is being heard and that his/her input is used.

And of course a page with your profile, where you have an overview of your ideas with the comments and likes and dislikes.

Physical object

The physical prototype is for the people who, for example, do not have mobile or access to the
have internet. The physical prototype is an A1 sheet on which the residents can write their ideas
be able to write and vote for others and thus be able to dialogue with each other
to go.

The physical component is placed nearby in public places,
retirement homes etc. where people without access to the app can share their ideas places over a period of time. Residents in certain communities can see each other’s ideas and can also like / dislike them, in addition, they can also do this with maintain a dialogue with each other about what they would like to see in the public space. After the period of time has passed, some people come from the municipality to enter into a dialogue with local residents via the physical prototype about their neighborhood.

Dash board for the municipality

Dashboard for the municipality
The Municipality of Amsterdam also needs an overview of all the data that they getting the interactive board, the app and the physical prototype. This information can be found on a dashboard in which all data is displayed
filtered and viewed. A team available

Our proposal for the municipality of Amsterdam is that there needs to be a team  available at the municipality to keep up with this concept.
For example, people are needed to keep the app up to date and people are needed for the feedback from the physical prototype finally, people are needed who can collect all the information keep track of the dashboard.
