Hoe gaat het met je?

An innovative and interactive app provides personal and motivational support to HBO students in improving mental issues and enhancing their mental well-being, with specific focus on developing healthy habits.

The problem

The mental health of HBO students is an important and current topic, especially considering the increase in mental issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression during the COVID-19 period. Fortunately, awareness about this problem is growing. For many students, the barrier to seeking professional help remains high, partly due to the stigma still surrounding mental health. To lower this barrier, platforms can be developed where students can access free and anonymous resources to work on their mental well-being.

The initial project assignment was to redesign the “Hoe gaat het met jou?” (How are you doing?) course of MijnIHelp. However, during the course of the project, we decided to pivot and shift the focus away from that particular course.

Current situation

Target group

Students of all ages are often stressed due to the various expectations and responsibilities placed upon them. This can result in study delays and even dropouts. The pressure experienced by students is a major cause of these issues. They not only have to perform academically but also often have part-time jobs, social obligations, and other activities. Additionally, certain personality traits and the use of alcohol or drugs can also contribute to the development of mental health problems.

Design challenge

How can I design an interactive digital product that specifically focuses on supporting HBO students in breaking their current behaviors and developing new habits to improve their mental well-being?”

The concept

The concept of “accountability” in the app emphasizes personal responsibility for one’s mental health. By encouraging users to actively participate in their own well-being, the app aims to have a positive impact on their mental health. Daily journaling will be a key feature, motivating users to maintain consistent engagement and track their progress. Additionally, the existing course will be redesigned to provide insights into personal growth and development. The app seeks to empower users by focusing on accountability, journaling, and an enhanced course, enabling them to take control of their mental health journey.

Why accountability? Because that concept is perceived as the most effective by the target audience.

Mees

Mees, the app’s mascot, is a non-binary blue tit that serves as a digital “buddy” for the user. Its goal is to motivate the user to work towards their goals and is always by their side. Mees reminds the user to use the app and provides motivation as they strive to achieve their goals. The cute appearance of the bird also captures the user’s attention, generating extra motivation and having a strong persuasive power.
